Sportscar Racing's Internet Magazine Tuesday, March 4, 2003 _ _ _ _ _ ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ‘Ring BMW Drivers We’ve followed Schnitzer’s M3 GTR testing at Monza – now comes news that the two cars for the ‘Ring 24 Hours will be driven by: Hans-Joachim Stuck / Boris Said / John Nielsen and Jörg Müller / Dirk Müller / Claudia Hürtgen. "That means we will have, as it were, a 'youngtimer' trio and a 'youngster' trio on the grid," says BMW Motorsport Director Mario Theissen. "The selection criteria were straightforward: it was a matter of choosing drivers with experience of the Nürburgring Nordschleife, the world's most challenging track, as well as experience with GT sports cars and 24-hour events." "We will be pitching for overall victory in this highly traditional endurance event," says BMW Motorsport Director Gerhard Berger. BMW’s most recent win in this race was in 1998, with a turbo-diesel 320d, the sixteenth win for the Munich manufacturer. Clearly, they’re going for no. 17 in 2003. The 400 plus (how much plus, we wonder) M3 GTR dominated the GT class of the ALMS in 2001, but wasn’t entered at Le Mans and received heft penalties for 2002, causing BMW to abandon any involvement in the US series. Will they be able to prise any of these six out of the cars during the race? _ Contents Copyright © dailysportscar.com. All Rights Reserved. _ |
