No French GP in 2004 ?

The French Grand Prix, scheduled to take place here on July 11, 2004, has been cancelled because of financial problems, Marcel Charmant, the president of the Nievre regional authority, told Saturday's edition of the Journal du Centre newspaper.

"The financial situation of the investment company means that it is not possible to give (F1 supremo) Bernie Ecclestone the guarantees he requires for the finance of the race in 2004," said Charmant.

The regional authority of Nievre is the majority shareholder in the company which owns the Magny-Cours circuit. Ralf Schumacher won this year's race at the circuit in central France. Meanwhile, reports in Britain suggested that the circuit authorities here still owed 10 million dollars in unpaid fees owed to the companies of Ecclestone.

The London-based F1 Racing magazine reported that if the money wasn't paid before the World Motorsports Council meeting on December 12 the race could be scratched from the schedule. The race was included on the 2004 calendar when the World Council last met in October, but was only listed as provisional.

The July 11 date was published "subject to conclusion of a contract." The Magny-Cours circuit has been home to the French Grand Prix since 1991, but there have been persistent rumours that it could return to Paul Ricard. Ricard is currently used as a test facility only.

Het is al een tijdje duidelijk dat men van de Grand Prix op Magny Cours vanaf wil. Bernie ziet hem liever op Paul Ricard of op Le Mans doorgaan.
Op zich zie ik een GP op Le Mans wel zitten. Dan gaat de Formule 1 eens terug naar de echte circuits, daar waar geschiedenis geschreven werd.

Geef toe: Spa, Nurburgring, Indy, Monaco en misschien ... Le Mans. Klinkt wel hé.

Als het Le Mans wordt, zal men op het Bugatti-circuit rijden en bijster veel geschiedenis hangt daar ook niet aan vast.

Ik vind het wel belachelijk dat voor die stomme kankerstokken al die circuits geschrapt worden... vorig jaar spa, dit jaar canada... komaan, just drive

Spijtige zaak dat Franse GP er niet komt in 2004. Oké MC is niet het meest uitdagende circuit, maar voor toeschouwers is het er echt practig, beste plekje is in Adelaide op Gradins EST.

Traditiegetrouw wordt de race van Groot-Brittannië in midden juli gereden maar die datum was eerst aan Frankrijk beloofd. Het gevolg hiervan is dat Groot-Brittannië zou moeten opboksen tegen het Europees Kampioenschap voetbal en Wimbledon begin juli. Daarom zal de organisatie er alles aan doen om de Grote Prijs te verschuiven naar 11 juli aangezien die datum nu vrij gekomen is.

De GP van Frankrijk 2004 lijkt gered. Een woordvoerder van het circuit Paul Ricard heeft gezegd dat de Franse GP volgend seizoen daar verreden wordt.

De GP op Magny Cours was van de kalender gevallen door budgettaire problemen. De Franse Motorsportvereniging FFSA heeft er alles aan gedaan om een alternatief te bieden en dat is er nu met het Paul Ricard-circuit. F1-paus Bernie Ecclestone moet wel nog zijn zegen en goedkeuring geven.

Het Paul Ricard-circuit was het toneel van de Franse GP tot 1991. De voorbije jaren testte Toyota er zijn wagens.
