If Peugeot came here brimming with renewed confidence after Marcus Gronholm's Finland victory, that feeling of wellbeing will have started to evaporate this morning, and continued to diminish over the day's closing stages. Harri Rovanpera hit gearbox problems soon after the start, losing fourth to what may be a system or electronic glitch. Even after a mid-leg gearbox change the problem recurred. Much worse, Marcus Gronholm's car started to show the same problem, a loss of fourth gear during the afternoon. "We have a little bit the same problem as Harri," admitted Gronholm. "Now the clutch is spinning and you lose fourth."

The Peugeot system allows the driver to "skip" or bypass a gear, so that's what the drivers are having to do. But the problem is not continuous apparently. For Rovanpera is able to use fourth during the early parts of a stage, but then when it "goes missing" he can change the selection mode and skip it. The team has been looking forward to the introduction of this five speeder for the whole season. Now they must be wondering whether it's a real step forward.
