Skoda to remain in rally world championship in 2005
Reuters / September 30, 2004
PRAGUE -- Skoda will remain in the world rally championship next year after scaling back operations this season, the Czech carmaker said on Thursday.
Spokesman Roman Meliska said the team would race Skoda's Fabia model in an unspecified number of races in 2005, adding that more details would be released at a news conference in Italy later in the day.
"For now I can only confirm that the board of Skoda Auto approved that the WRC project would continue in 2005," Meliska said.
He declined to elaborate on the team's drivers for next season but added that Skoda, who are taking part in the Rally of Italy this weekend, would also appear in the championship's three remaining races.
Skoda, owned by Germany's Volkswagen, are not eligible to score points in the manufacturers' championship this season because they are developing their car.
They were fifth in the 2003 standings with 23 points. Citroen won the manufacturers' championship with 160 points.
