Jacques Villeneuve: "That was a very disappointing race. We were a lot slower than I thought we would be. The car was very difficult to drive and I couldn’t get any grip at the start. That’s it."

The Canadian was outshone again by Felipe Massa, though truth be told neither Sauber was competitive here, and they were the lowest Michelin team. But Jacques was the one who made the glaring error, losing it under braking and spinning off. He just doesn't seem to have the killer instinct any more, nor is he the kind of driver Sauber need, given the relative position of the C24. They need a young, enthusiastic, but technical driver as well to really develop the car, and Davidson would be a perfect man for the job.

Once again Jacques Villeneuve was nowhere to be seen on the radar, and in recent days relations with the team have been further strained over a testing incident in which Sauber reduced his running and gave Massa an extra day.
Peter Sauber is a man who generally keeps things fairly close to his chest, but even he has come out and admitted that things with Jacques are not working out as either side had hoped. How much grace Villeneuve has got left within the team is unclear, but unless his performances improve, or unless he can so much as match Massa in what is admittedly a bit of a mercurial car at present, the clock continues to tick. It is an unpleasant sight, that of a former champion struggling to hang on in the sport.
