GP2 series to have new weekend format with longer second race
24/05/2005

The GP2 series has announced changes to the weekend timetable. They include a longer second race and a new start time. The GP2 series has revealed that the length of the second race at each future meeting will be extended. The 80km, 30 minute race, will now run for 120km, or 45 minutes. The new format will make its debut at the Nürburgring this weekend. The change comes in the wake of the alterations to Formula One qualifying regulations. The move means that fans will now be treated to an increased spectacle in the shorter of the two GP2 series races, on Sunday morning.

Sunday’s GP2 series race will begin at 10:00 am at each event, and will be run on the existing rules as laid out in the GP2 series Sporting Regulations. In other words, it will remain a lights to flag sprint, with no pitstops. The grid will still be formed by taking the finishing positions of the first race of the weekend, with the top eight positions reversed. Similarly, the points system will remain unaltered with the top six receiving reward for their races: 6 points for the winner, 5 for second, 4 for third, 3 for fourth, 2 for third and 1 point for sixth place. The classified driver with the fastest lap still gets two points.

“The increased length of our second race is good news for the GP2 series,” said series organiser Bruno Michel. “It is an welcome bonus, as it will allow more scope for the entertaining battles we have been treated to thus far in 2005. I’m happy that the GP2 series will be able to provide the fans with an extra dose of excitement.”
