Ergens diep verscholen in deze thread maakte AJ melding van de uitspraken van Martin Brundle op de Britse TV. Strekking van die woorden was dat het asfalt op Indy danig veranderd was en dat Bridgestone via zustermerk Firestone reeds een verkapte test achter de rug had tijdens de voorbereiding op de Indy 500.

Dat argument heeft Michelin nu in zijn "verdediging" opgenomen:

“Michelin was not allowed to test on the resurfaced track before the race weekend, and therefore needed to make several assumptions about the surface, the race and its interaction with the tires,” the e-mail stated. “Bridgestone (through its Firestone brand) participated in the Indianapolis 500, which allowed it to experience the new surface ahead of the F1 race.”

Back in early April, Firestone’s first IRL test at the newly “diamond-grinded” IMS track was halted after the company perceived an "uneven" wear rate provoked by the new surface. The company's tires eventually performed fuss-free throughout the month of May.
