Spectrum Motorsport plans FIA GT campaign with two Saleens
New team Spectrum Motorsport, led by Dana Brewer, is planning to enter two Saleen cars in the 2007 season of the FIA GT Championship. One car will be entered in the full season, and will be driven by two as-yet-unnamed American drivers, while the second car, to run in the Citation Cup, will start at Silverstone and will be shared by Brewer and a British driver.
“We have agreed to buy two cars, which previously ran in the American Le Mans Series,” Brewer said. “The cars are among the best examples of racing Saleens, and they have undergone a number of developments.” The cars are currently being shipped to Europe, where the new team will undertake a shakedown before heading for the Nogaro test on March 6th and 7th. The lead car will then be air-freighted to Zhuhai for the first round.
“We are keen to see how we compare to the rest of the grid,” Brewer continued. “The car is a potential race winner, and should prove to be competitive. The two American drivers have raced in Indycar, and have recent GrandAm experience, having both competed in this year’s Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona. The circuits will all be new to them, but they are professional drivers and should soon be up to speed. They are really excited about the new challenge.”
The team will be running Michelin tyres, with the lead car running on development rubber, while the Citation car will be on the standard tyres.
As for Brewer, he continued : “I have always wanted to run an American car in an international series, and I feel this is the right moment to move into Europe, and the Saleen looks like being the right car. We’ll see what happens !” An announcement on the drivers is expected by March 1st.
