Jalabert ready to hang up his wheels
Frenchman Laurent Jalabert, one of the most successful riders of his generation, will retire from cycling at the end of the season. At 33, and with 135 victories behind him, the CSC-Tiscali team leader said on Tuesday it was time to bid farewell after 14 seasons as a professional.
Jalabert won the Tour of Spain in 1996, was time-trial world champion in 1997 and
won some of the most important classics, including Milan-San Remo, the Tour of Lombardy and the San Sebastian Classic. "It's an important day in my riding career but I have decided to bid farewell to cycling at the end of the season," Jalabert said on the Tour de France rest day.
The decision comes on the back of Mario Cipollini's decision to retire prior to the
start of the Tour de France after his team, Acqua and Sapone team, failed to gain an entry.
