Ford is preparing a return to Formula 1 under its own name with the Jordan team, putting the car giant in direct competition with its own Jaguar brand, according to this week's AUTOSPORT magazine.

A three-year partnership with the Silverstone-based team is being finalised that could lead to it being known as Ford-Jordan from next season. An announcement of the deal could possibly be made before the Hungarian Grand Prix on August 18.

The company is understood to feel that the partnership with Jordan will provide it with a chance to achieve maximum publicity for its brand in key markets at mimimum cost, in comparison to its expensive programme with Jaguar.

Ford's famous Blue Oval symbol would be carried on the cars, with the company's Cosworth engines providing the power.
Although Jordan has a contract with Honda that lasts until the end of 2003, the team is likely to need to find a new tie-up with a manufacturer. British American Racing's relationship with Honda is strong and David Richards' outfit is expected to eventually become the Japanese giant's sole partner in F1.
