Ecclestone might turn his back on Belgium

Formula 1 boss Bernie Ecclestone has expressed his irritation with Belgian politicians who are threatening the future of Formula 1 racing at Spa-Francorchamps.

The Belgian government's stance on tobacco advertising has left a cloud over the country's grand prix for the past couple of years. With a number of other nations vying to be included on the F1 calendar, Spa could be dropped even though it is the most popular race of the year.

Ecclestone told French newspaper Le Soir : "I don't know what's going on with the Belgian politicians. Most countries are supportive of their grands prix. If there are problems they try to find a solution.

"Each year I fight with the Belgians for their race. It seems as if we've got to a position where they don't want their grand prix anymore."

F1 has been given an exemption from tobacco advertising bans in countries like the UK until 2006, but the Belgian government is pushing ahead to outlaw it next year.

Its stance could cost Spa dear and open the door to potential races in Russia, Turkey, China and Bahrain.
