Mark Martin, the second place finisher in Sunday's Pop Secret 400 at Rockingham and second in NASCAR Winston Cup points, was found to have an unapproved spring on the left-front of his car and could face penalties, including a points deduction, this week.
NASCAR inspectors found that the spring did not have sufficient coiling. NASCAR requires that the springs be wound into four-and-a-half coils. The one on Martin's car contained four-and-three-eighths coils, NASCAR said.
"As with all issues we have after a race, we will deal with it on Monday," said NASCAR representative Danielle Frye.
NASCAR this season has added points deductions to the usual fines for technical violations. Martin trails championship leader Tony Stewart by 87 points after Sunday's race at 1.017-mile North Carolina Speedway. A 25-point penalty would drop him to 112 behind with two races to go.
