Former Indianapolis 500 winner and IRL IndyCar champion Kenny Brack has been told he should make a full recovery from his injuries following Sunday's horror crash at Texas Motor Speedway, when his car disintegrated against the catch fencing after he touched wheels with Tomas Scheckter at 200mph.
The 37-year-old Swede underwent surgery on Sunday night on his fractured right leg and broken ankles, and will undergo a further operation on his fractured lower back. Following this, he should be transferred to Indianapolis to begin his rehabilitation programme.
His orthopedic surgeon has estimated that it will take at least three months to recover from his injuries, as plates and screws were inserted in both ankles, and a bone from his hip was used to strengthen his right ankle. Brack also suffered a cut over his left eye and a broken sternum in the horrendous crash.
"There was less damage than they initially thought," said Team Rahal press officer Tom Blattler. "His back could take some time [to heal], but Reinert and [IRL doctor] Henry Bock both said they anticipate him making a full recovery."
Team principal Bobby Rahal said: "We are very happy to see how Kenny was in such good condition after the surgery on Sunday. He came through with flying colours. The doctors are very optimistic. We are thankful for the great efforts of the doctors in the surgery and the IRL safety crew at the track. Thank goodness the Dallara chassis was so strong in that kind of crash."
