Audi A4 gets first test
Drivers impressed at Jerez

A selection of Audi's works DTM driver line-up have had their first serious runs in the new A4. Tom Kristensen, Mattias Ekström and Emanuele Pirro drove the 2004 challenger at Jerez last week, clocking up more than 1000km.

“I felt right at home in the A4 after just 20 laps,” said Ekström. “From a driving point of view there are no big differences to the 2003 TT-R model. Everything is just a little bit better.

“The people at Audi have left nothing to chance. But of course it's too early to talk about the car's full potential after one test.”

Ekström, a three-year veteran of the DTM, acted as a kind of coach to his two new team-mates. Although both Kristensen and Pirro have fine touring car pedigree, both have more recently been sportscar racers. Neither has driven in the “new” DTM.

“I felt good in the car from the off,” said Pirro. “It's good fun, good-natured and you can really attack with it.”

“We had no teething troubles at all,” added Audi Sport boss Wolfgang Ullrich. “We've gotten to know the car very well over the five days.”

Audi is the first factory to have already tested its 2004 car. Frank Biela, Martin Tomczyk and Christian Abt will also be on the driving force.
