BMW unveils Nurburgring plans

BMW Motorsport has confirmed its driver line-up for the two M3 GTRs it will campaign in this year's Nurburgring 24 Hour race, which takes place on June 12/13.

The German manufacturer suffered ignominy at the start of last year's event when both its cars suffered gearbox failures on the first lap. Both cars returned to the race and set the pace but crashed out during the night. Now BMW plans to make up for its defeat to eventual winners Opel last year with an all-star driver line-up.

BMW Deutschland ETCC drivers Dirk Muller and Jorg Muller will team up alongside veteran ace Hans Stuck in one of the Schnitzer Motorsport-run developments of the 2001 ALMS GT championship-winning car, while NASCAR super-sub, and former ALMS PTG BMW driver Boris Said will partner ex-F1 driver Pedro Lamy and Dutchman Duncan Huisman in the other.

“We are delighted to be fielding such a strong squad,” said BMW Motorsport director Mario Theissen. “The two Mullers and Stuck were our firm number one choices.

“Huisman was selected on the basis of his persuasive performance in the ETCC, and with Lamy we have on board another two-times winner of this marathon event next to Stuck. Said has for years been racing successfully for BMW in sprint and endurance events in the US.”

Despite winning this event no less than 16 times overall, BMW faces stiff competition in 2004 not only from Opel's converted DTM Astras but also from Audi which is developing an endurance version of its DTM TT-R for the race.

Benieuwd wat de line-up in de Belcarraces gaat zijn. Jammer genoeg geen Belg maar we zijn al content dat ze naar hier komen
