Richards tipped to replace Pollock at BAR.
Subaru world rally boss Dave Richards will be named as the replacement for Craig Pollock at British American Racing, following the founder's decision to quit this morning [Monday].
Britain's BBC Radio Five Live claimed that the head of the Prodrive company, made famous by its involvement in both the WRC and touring cars among others, will be named as Pollock's replacement at BAR's pre-season launch in Brackley tomorrow.
Should the rumour prove to be true, it would not be Richards' first foray into Formula One, as he temporarily took over at the helm for Benetton during the 1998 season. Despite being swiftly replaced at the Enstone team when his style did not gel with that of other, more influential, people, Richards' path back to the top flight could be eased by the presence of British American Tobacco in both the rally and F1 camps. BAT owns the 555 brand which adorned Subaru's WRC Imprezas before joining the BAR campaign. The grand prix outfit is now backed solely by Lucky Strike, another BAT brand.
Richards' recent attention has been firmly on rallying, as he guided Richard Burns to this year's world drivers' title. However, a wider focus has also seen the entrepreneur taking charge of rallying's television coverage, via the International Sportsworld Communicators [ISC] operation, something he intends to bring up to the standard enjoyed by Formula One.
Pollock announced his resignation whilst the Toyota team was unveiling its first F1 car in Germany this morning.
