Geen Britse GP in 2010?

Voor wie het niet heeft gevolgd, de Britse GP zal in 2009 de laatste keer op Silverstone verreden worden. Donington is vanaf 2010 de gastheer. Althans, dat zijn de plannen. Voordat Donington GP-waardig is moet er nog wat verbouwd worden Al vanaf dag 1 zijn er twijfels rondom de plannen van Donington en meer specifiek die van Simon Gillett. De uitbater van Donington en organisator van de GP.

Aan het begin van het seizoen rondom de tijdelijke goedkeuring van het circuit i.v.m. de aanleg van een tunnel. Door de FIA goedgekeurd, door de MSA afgekeurd. De eerste weekends heeft men op een groot gedeelte van het circuit onder een permanente gele vlag gereden. Andere meetings zijn geannuleerd of op hoop van zegen naar achteren gezet.

En jawel, zoals door velen voorspeld zijn de financiele problemen van Simon Gillett nu aan het licht gekomen!

The British MotoGP round is among the events now under threat following Thursday’s announcement that circuit boss Simon Gillett is being sued by owner Tom Wheatcroft over 'unpaid rent'.

Wheatcroft & Son Limited awarded Gillett's company Donington Ventures Leisure Ltd a 150-year lease of the circuit in January, 2007.

“It is with great reluctance that we have taken this decision,” said Kevin Wheatcroft. “Donington Ventures Leisure Ltd owe us nearly £2.5 million in rent dating back to September, 2008.

Ook met de vergunningen loopt het niet lekker:

North West Leicestershire District Council has made it clear that unless a crucial agreement is signed by then, the planning permission agreed four months ago for a £100 million redevelopment of the track will be revoked.

The deadline, which was more lenient than anticipated, has been chosen because Simon Gillett, Donington's chief executive, is due to face Tom Wheatcroft, the track's owner, in court on June 8 regarding £2.47 million in back rent.

Ecclestone has reiterated that if Donington Park does not get its act together, then that will be the end of the British GP - and thinks it is high time the government now takes action to support the race.

"If Donington can't put on the British Grand Prix then that's it," he said in Bahrain. "We will be leaving Britain. There is no question of us going back to Silverstone. They have had enough chances and have not delivered what they promised.
