BAR have called a press conference for Monday, at which they are expected to unveil Jenson Button.

The team will make a 2003 driver announcement at 5.00pm. It is expected that they will reveal the signing of Button, whose exit from Renault was confirmed on Saturday.

Button has promised that his future plans would be announced before next weekend’s German Grand Prix. He has been linked with Toyota, Sauber and Jaguar but BAR have emerged as favourites to secure his services.

Button was giving nothing away in Magny-Cours this weekend.

Speaking immediately after the race, he said: "I’ve got my future sorted but I’m not going to tell you any more."

Earlier in the day, BAR boss David Richards had showered the 22-year-old with praise.

He said: "Jenson is a unique talent. He is the best British driver - for the future at least. I'm taken aback that Renault would let him go like that."

A move to BAR would reunite Button with his former Williams colleague Geoff Willis, who is now technical director at the Brackley-based team.

If Button comes on board, it is likely to spell the end of Olivier Panis’ stay with the outfit. Richards had hoped to get the big-earning Jacques Villeneuve off the payroll but the 1997 world champion has a binding contract for another year.

Panis has been linked with a move to Toyota as a replacement for Allan McNish.

BAR maakt momenteel z'n rijdersduo voor 2003 bekend; bijna zo goed als zeker dat Button daar rijdt volgend seizoen.

Da's de omgekeerde wereld zeker? De baas wil de piloot buiten maar die wil nog wat blijven om geld te verdienen. Dat de wagen rijdt als een kruiwagen speelt blijkbaar geen rol. Een beetje meer sportieve ambitie had ik van Jacques toch wel verwacht eigenlijk.

Mogelijk wilt hij gewoon niet weg van 'zijn' BAR, waarvan hij eigenlijk mee aan de basis lag. En waar zou hij anders naartoe moeten ?

welk alternatief heeft hij ...
Ik kan van het huidige rijdersveld minstens 10 rijders opnoemen die evengoed of beter zijn dan Villeneuve.

Ferrari, Williams en McLaren lijken me dan niet echt geinteresseerd. Bij Sauber past hij niet echt in de huisstijl (2 jonge piloten), en van alle andere teams is BAR het beste. Reken er nog bij dat als hij naar een ander team zou gaan, dat hij dan wel eens 50% of meer van zijn loon zou moeten inleveren.

Young British star cuts ties to Williams

British American Racing has confirmed that Jenson Button will drive for the team in 2003 at a press conference in London this afternoon (Monday).

BAR have reached a four-year agreement with Button, which cuts his ties to Williams who had held a long-term contract on his services. The terms are for an initial two years, after which the team will have options for a further two years.

"I'm thrilled to be joining BAR," said Button. "The past few weeks have been very exciting and I've been flattered by the enormous attention I've received. I've had a whole range of opportunities open to me but after careful consideration of what would be best for my future, BAR provided me with an excellent opportunity to progress and ultimately, I hope, to achieve my ambition to be World Champion.

"David Richards has talked me through the long-term strategy for the team in great detail and I have been very impressed with the strength of the partnership with Honda. I have no doubt that, together, we can all look forward to some very exciting times ahead."

Commenting on today's announcement, team principal David Richards said: "I'm delighted to welcome Jenson to BAR. He has an extraordinary talent which now needs to be nurtured in the right environment in order for it to flourish.

"Over the past seven months the management team have set out a long-term plan which is designed to deliver success to BAR and our partners. This won't happen overnight and we have realistic expectations for the next two seasons. In the current Formula 1 climate, we are fortunate to have the stability of long-term funding and a strong, developing relationship with Honda. Our agreement with Jenson will enable us to carry that stability through to our driver line-up and, as we move forward, I have every confidence that he will play a pivotal role in gelling the team together."

The announcement came two days after Renault revealed at the French Grand Prix that its test driver Fernando Alonso will take over the Briton's drive next year, pushing Button out of the team.

Button is expected to partner Jacques Villeneuve next year, with Olivier Panis making way for him, although no announcement has yet been made.

ik vind dit een beetje jammer. Ik zie Button al dezelfde weg opgaan als Fisichella. Een groot talent dat nooit echte kansen krijgt door in het verkeerde team terecht te komen.

Jenson mag dan al "thrilled" zijn (sinds gisterenochtend zijn ze dat in Limburg ook), ik zie zijn toekomst somber in. Zijn prestaties in het huidige seizoen hadden normaliter naar een trapje hoger moeten leiden, niet naar de achteruitgang (dubbelzinnig woord in dit geval). Eens te meer, talent is maar een klein deeltje geworden in het geheel van bepalende faktoren.
Bijzonder jammer.

Zoals ik al zei, een beetje meer SPORTIEVE ambitie had ik verwacht. Geld zal hij nu al wel genoeg verdiende hebben zeker?
En dat de 3 grote teams niet aan hem geïnteresseerd zijn weet ik nog zo zeker niet, (ok, Williams tel ik ook niet mee) en als het zo zou zijn, is het aan hemzelf om de interesse terug op te wekken. De prestaties met de BAR zijn natuurlijk de meest recente en liggen het verst in het geheugen, maar wat hij in zijn rookie-jaar bij Williams presteerde en natuurlijk het jaar daarop toen hij WK werd met een (uiteraard zeer goede) Williams wordt blijkbaar snel vergeten...
Maar bv Villeneuve in de plaats van Coulthard? Dat zou toch een plausibel alternatief zijn?

Mij viel het ook tegen dat Villeneuve zich zo makkelijk lijkt neer te leggen bij nog een seizoen bij BAR.

Ik ben er bijna van overtuigd dat hem zo ongeveer hetzelfde gaat overkomen als Peterson : in de beginjaren door iedereen op handen gedragen en zowat de snelste van het peleton of zeker diegene met de meeste balls, dan enkele jaren weggedeemsterd bij Lotus, March en Tyrrell en door velen afgeschreven om ten slotte te worden heropgevist door Chapman en aan te tonen dat hij nog niets van z'n kunnen verloren had. Helaas was het toen overduidelijk als tweede piloot na Andretti.

geef me eens een reden waarom ik Villeneuve als een beter piloot zou moeten beschouwen dan Coulthard ...
Omwille van zijn wereldtitel ?? Coulthard is nog nooit the right man on the right place geweest ... Eerst een aantal jaar het knechtje van Mika geweest, en toen mika weg was, doet McLaren het slecht.
Bovendien een rebels type in het modelhuis dat McLaren toch is ?? Betere opties dan BAR zijn er momenteel niet voor Villeneuve ...

Olivier Panis may not necessarily find himself out of a drive at British American Racing next year, despite the signing of Jenson Button on a long-term deal, according to team boss David Richards. Former world champion Jacques Villeneuve has a year to run on his contract, but may still decide to leave the team. Richards also cryptically stated that there is a scenario to have all three drivers on his books, but refused to explain how.
