Een rare regel als je het mij vraagt. Bij rallies/heuvelklims zijn er toch ook risico's voor coureurs/toeschouwers?

Ook tijdens de wedstrijd van 1999 ging een MERCEDES over kop .
Dit met P.Dumbreck aan het stuur rond 20.45u op het rechte stuk voor Indianapolis.( dit op de zelfde plaats weer Webber er al was afgegaan tijdens de qualificatie) . Ik zat toen op de tribunes en toen de beelden van die crash op de grote schermen werden getoond zag je iedereen wet bleek wegtrekken !
later die maand was in Le Mans en ben ik met de wagen langs dat stuk van het circuit gaan zoeken naar die plaats. Op de plaats waar die Mercedes uiteindelijk was terecht gekomen (in een stukje bos waar ze net bomen hadden gerooid) bleek er nog stukken carbon te zitten in de stronken. Die hangen hier nu in een kadertje naast mij op bureau, samen met een foto van die CLR NR.6

Absoluut. Die flippende en vliegende Mercedessen zijn wel heel spectaculair en staan bij iedereen nog vers in het geheugen gegrift, maar dat is niet "de" crash van Le Mans.
Toen ik de titel van deze thread zag, dacht ik onmiddellijk aan Pierre Levegh in 1955. Die crash is het grootste drama dat de autosport ooit heeft gekend.

The 3-time European Champion John Nielsen last evening miraculously escaped without a scratch after his 700hp Sauber C8-racer doing 377km/h suddenly took off like an aeroplane and was thrown 15 metres into the air above the famous Le Mans track, 150km from Paris. Only after a flight of 200 metres the powerful sportscar landed, totalling itself by the violent impact with the track surface. John Nielsen was able to extract himself uninjured from the smoldering wreck and scramble to safety. The dramatic accident took place during the time trials prior to the classic 24 Hour race held today* and tomorrow*, and the drama was witnessed by 40,000 spectators. Quoting John: "It was at the same time a scary and weird experience. Suddenly I felt that all points of balance were nullified. I realised that I had actually taken off in the car, which flew like an aeroplane. 'Here comes the BANG', I thought - and so it most certainly did, as the car landed, and turned over. Luckily, I was able to unfasten my belt and climb out uninjured, and run away. The car was smoking badly, so it was only a matter of getting as far away from the wreck as possible. Neither myself nor any of our technicians have so far been able to figure out what really happened. We know that the car somehow during the high speed performance lost something to remove aeroynamics from it, but we do not know exactly what. I am happy to be uninjured, and that's the main thing, even though it is a bitter pill to swallow to miss the actual race**." John Nielsen is despite his accident not in a worse state than he is able to remain in Paris for the weekend to attend the race as a spectator.
