Ik heb juist eens gekeken en Matthias Kahle heeft dit jaar zijn debut gemaakt in de Dakar met een Fast&Speed-Honda. Halfweg reed hij zelfs 10de algemeen, maar na de rustdag kreeg de buggy versnellingsbakproblemen en moest hij uiteindelijk opgeven.

De Sachs dempers werpen hun vruchten af. De Villiers wint de Rallye Transiberico nipt voor Roma en Alphand. Matthias Kahle wordt 4de in zijn debut en was niet heel veel trager dan de rest; gisteren verloor hij meer dan 20 minuut toen hij op een steen reed en zijn ophanging moest herstellen.

Blijkbaar heeft Phoenix vorig jaar al ervaring op gedaan omdat ze toen de Touareg van Miller runden.

Benieuwd of Sousa ook gevraagd wordt om in dienst van de fabriekspiloten te rijden.

De Villiers en Sainz zijn al zeker, maar VW blijft op zoek naar vervangers voor Saby en Kleinschmidt. Ari Vatanen, Thierry Magnaldi, Mark Miller en Matthias Kahle werden uitgenodigd tijdens een uitgebreide test in Tunesie. Er namen ook 2 nieuwe copiloten deel: Ralph Pitchford uit Zuid-Afrika (navigator van Miller tijdens test, vermoedelijk aangezien von Zitzewitz voortaan naast De Villiers zit) en de Australier Lee Palmer (navigeerde Kahle).

Benieuwd wie uiteindelijk geselecteerd zal worden.

Het 3de rijderspaar is bekend: Mark Miller/Ralph Pitchford. Miller presteerde dit jaar al sterk in Dakar met von Zitzewitz toen al copiloot. Ralph Pitchford was dit jaar de navigator van Alfie Cox en hij is een ervaren mechanieker (in 2003 voor Luc Alphand, in 2004 voor Colin McRae en daarvoor voor Alfie Cox, toen nog op motor).

Het is blijkbaar belangrijk voor Volkswagen om opnieuw een Amerikaanse piloot in te zetten (na Robby Gordon in 2005 en Miller in 2006).

We hebben dus
  • Carlos Sainz/Michel Périn
  • Giniel de Villiers/Dirk von Zitzewitz
  • Mark Miller/Ralph Pitchford
Benieuwd welke rijder(s) ze nog zullen aantrekken: Matthias Kahle, Ari Vatanen of Thierry Magnaldi. Andy Schulz lijkt mij al zeker navigator te blijven; misschien Tina Thörner ook wel.

De Race Touareg 2 zal in 2007 uitgerust zijn met een geevolueerde motor.

The 2.5 litre five-cylinder in-line diesel engine in the Race Touareg 2 is equipped with a completely newly developed cylinder head, which helps to increase the power output to 285 hp and push the maximum torque over 600 Nm. The response characteristics of the two-stage forced induction Turbo-Diesel were also noticeably improved for the demanding desert event.

During a series of dynamometer runs, intensive tests and its first competitive outing the newest version of the engine has already proven its performance and reliability. Because of the 39 millimetre diameter intake-air restrictor, stipulated by the regulations, the absolute power only climbs by approximately 10 hp. However, the new and improved cylinder-head architecture allows a superior gas flow rate, which improves the power and initial response throughout the rev range. The torque delivered by the engine climbs correspondingly to over 600 Nm.

The induction and exhaust tracts on the four-valve engine differ from its predecessor in that they are no longer mounted on one side of the engine, but opposite one another. "In spite of the greater power output the engine is actually more thermally efficient than before”, emphasises Donatus Wichelhaus is responsible for the engine development.

  • 2007: 2.5 liter, 209 kw/285 pk, 600+ Nm (gewijzigde cilinderkop)

  • Mitsubishi Pajero MPR13: 4.0 liter, V8, 270 pk @ 5500 rpm, 420 Nm @ 3500 rpm
  • Schlesser-Ford: 5.4 liter, V8, 285 pk
  • X-Raid BMW X3CC: 3.0 liter, 6 cilinder, twin-stage turbo diesel, 272 pk @ 4000 rpm, 620 Nm @ 2100 rpm

De BMW motor blijkt dit jaar iets meer te leveren: 286 pk (althans de productiemotor zonder restrictor) en 625 Nm koppel.

Op de stand van ZF Sachs Race Enigineering in Essen stonden de trouwens de nieuwe schokdempers van de Touareg en de koppeling. De koppeling was gedimensioneerd op 1150 Nm; die voor Formule 1 op 550 Nm

Blijkbaar zullen diesels een groter voordeel hebben dit jaar, door een reglementswijziging.
