Dear Mark,

Willy Rampf basically can not say much about the car yet, but he considers the new design as quite different and futuristic. The modified two-keel design is meant for bringing as much air as possible under the car.
It's not possible for him to say more at this stage.

I hope this still helps.

Best regards

Ilka

The FW26 Pokes Its Nose Out

The BMW WilliamsF1 Team launches its 2004 race car Valencia, 5th January 2004. In the bright Spanish sunshine and average temperatures of 15° C, Juan Pablo Montoya and Ralf Schumacher completed the maiden laps of the team’s new challenger for the 2004 Formula One World Championship, the WilliamsF1 BMW FW26. The radical new design of the FW26, especially the snub nose and front wing geometry, attracted widespread commentary.

Juan Pablo Montoya left the garage at 14:40hrs and recorded 14 laps altogether on the 4.005 km circuit, before handing over the car to team-mate, Ralf Schumacher. The German started driving at 16:34hrs and completed a total of 3 laps.

Juan Pablo Montoya: “My first impression of the FW26 is very good. The car doesn’t feel a lot different from last year’s, which is a very god start and I think we have an excellent potential car. I felt comfortable straight away and could push the car from the outset, so thanks us due to the team for having built a very promising car. In spite of the restrictions imposed by the new rules, which give you less drag and make the car more difficult under braking, everything feels just right. The dusty track conditions were not 100% ideal today and we only completed six hard laps, so I don’t want to sound too optimistic, but there isn’t a single area that doesn’t work. I am very, very pleased, I think this car has got a good future.”

Ralf Schumacher: “It is always positive if the first day runs according to plan and I can say that the car feels good, perhaps similar to the FW25. I really have high expectations of the radical approach taken to this new car. Of course the roll out on launch day does not tell us much about the true performance of a new car and I only completed three laps. Basically it is all about installation laps and system checks, so it is far too early to make serious comments about the FW26.”

Frank Williams op Motorsport.com
Quote:
Team boss Frank Williams said despite the previous achievements gained by his team in Formula One, it's painful that it hasn't won a championship for six years and his ambition for 2004 is to win every race. That may be a bit of a tall order but the team has been putting every effort into making sure the FW26, launched at Valencia today, will be fighting fit right from the start. The 2003 car struggled early on and Williams is not about to make the same mistake again.

"The FW25 didn't appear to be a Championship-winning car at the start of the season but the team worked exceptionally hard to develop it into a title challenger," said Williams at the launch of the new car. "Unfortunately we didn't claim a tenth title with it, but we made enough progress to close the gap to Ferrari. Development of the FW26 started in March of last year, so we will hopefully go into this season with a competitive car from the outset."

Engine supplier BMW has certainly contributed to Williams' progress in the last couple of years and 2003 was the team's most successful season with the German engine manufacturer. "BMW is a truly dedicated engine partner and this provides a considerable advantage," said Williams.

"The contract we signed in June last year reinforces the existing agreement but also takes it to greater levels of integration. BMW brings a substantial pool of resource to the partnership, which combines well with our specialist technical knowledge; I'm confident that the agreement will continue to yield significant dividends."

It's not news that some teams find it difficult to keep up with the financial demands of F1 and sponsors seem to be increasingly difficult to come by. Prost and Arrows disappeared in the last two years and Minardi, Jordan and Sauber constantly struggle with their small budgets. Certainly Williams is a more successful team and more likely to attract sponsors, but Frank also puts it down to knowing when to adapt to changes.

"In my opinion, there are always opportunities to exploit, you just have to look for them and, with Formula One increasing its presence in Asia, a whole new market of potential commercial opportunity is opening up," he commented. "However, in any business these days, one has to adapt to changing economic contexts. The commercial team at WilliamsF1 therefore maintains a flexible approach to new business by ensuring we offer a competitive package for a potential partner's sponsorship spend."

As for the future, Williams is always ready for the challenges of a new season. The last championship victories were in 1997 with Jacques Villeneuve taking the drivers' crown and the team the constructors' and Williams wants that level of success back again.

"Six years have passed since we last won a Championship title and that hurts!" He remarked. "However, I love the anticipation that comes with each new season. Neither Patrick (Head, technical director) nor myself have ever been one of those people that live in the past."

"Each day brings new challenges and, for me, those challenges are whether our car crosses the finish line in front of everyone else's. So that is my ambition for the forthcoming season, to win every race, steal Ferrari's crown and add another Championship title to the record."

bwa ....

'k zou eens willen zien wat FW zou zeggen moest JPM vertellen: This is the most crappy car I've ever driven and besides it looks as bad as it drives... dat zou pas lachen zijn.
