1960 Season Recap
February 6, 2002
10:44 PM EST (0344 GMT)

Rex White showed stellar consistency throughout the season and ran away from a young Richard Petty in the season long point standings. A number of star drivers jockeyed for top five positions in the standings throughout the year, however.

FIVE RACES TO GO: Martinsville, VA - Points leader Rex White held a commanding lead over young upstart Richard Petty with five races remaining in the 1960 season. Petty, in turn, was far ahead of the third place battle, which was heating up. Bobby Johns, two-time champion Buck Baker, Ned Jarrett, and defending champion Lee Petty were engaged in a serious competition for third place in the standings, all separated by less than 500 points. At Martinsville, White built on his lead with his fifth win of the season Richard Petty saw his championship hopes dashed when he was caught in a crash with his father, Lee, on lap 290. Bobby Johns was also involved. Richard Petty finished 32nd, Lee finished 23rd and Johns 24th. Ned Jarrett had engine trouble and came in 28th. Buck Baker was the only contender of the group with his fifth place finish.

FOUR RACES TO GO: North Wilkesboro, NC - Rex White extended his lead over Richard Petty with his second straight win, this coming at North Wilkesboro Speedway. Petty looked stuck in the runner-up position in the standings, finishing sixth in the race. Among his closest competitors, Buck Baker and Ned Jarrett had respectable finishes with their fifth and seventh place finishes. Lee Petty crashed for the third time in his last six races, finishing 20th. Bobby Johns was not entered in the race.

THREE RACES TO GO: Charlotte, NC - Points leader Rex White clinched the 1960 championship with his sixth place finish at the inaugural National 400 at Charlotte Motor Speedway. Richard Petty clinched second in the standings with his runner-up finish in the race. Ned Jarrett followed in third place, and with Lee Petty again having car trouble and finishing 36th, the points race tightened from third place down. Contender Bobby Johns finished ninth and Buck Baker was 18th. It looked as if the four-way battle for third was going to be a classic.

TWO RACES TO GO: Richmond, VA - Speedy Thompson, former mainstay among the top five in the standings, won his third second consecutive race with his victory at the Atlantic Rural Fairgrounds in Richmond. Defending champion Lee Petty forfeited his seat in the race to son Maurice, costing the elder Petty a shot at Johns (Johns was not entered in the race either), Buck Baker and Ned Jarrett for a top five in the point standings. Baker finished the race in sixth, Jarrett in third and Richard Petty in fourth.

FINAL RACE: Hampton, GA - Bobby Johns won the season finale at Atlanta International Raceway to take third place in the final point standings. Buck Baker struggled to a 20th place finish and missed his opportunity to catch Johns in the standings. Lee Petty finished the race in sixth, but could not threaten Ned Jarrett for the final spot in the season standings' top five. Jarrett's 43rd place finish cost him dearly, however, as he missed holding Baker off by a mere 14 points. 1960 champion Rex White's fifth place finish gave him a 3936-point margin the standings. Johns, in third place in the standings, was only 454 points ahead of the sixth place Petty.
