Mark Lovell verongelukt

De Brit Marc Lovell is verongelukt in een Amerikaanse rally. Ik herinner me nog dat hij destijds met een Ford RS 200 (één van de mooiste rallywagens ooit gebouwd) reed en ook daarna altijn één van de plaatselijke vedetten was in de RAC Rally met o.a. Sierra Cosworth. De RAC werd toen vel uitgebreider uitgezonden op de BBC en de race om de beste Brit werd ook uitvoerig gevolgd door de camera's.
Hij was aan een serieuze tweede carriere bezig in de USA als officieel Subaru piloot. Ook zijn Co-piloot kwam om het leven.
Toch weer een spijtige zaak voor de Rallysport.

Two of my old "Yumping Yarns' heroes died at the weekend driving their Subaru on a rally in the USA. When I first began doing cartoons in the 1980's these two along with other characters like Russell Brookes and Jimmy McRae dominated the British Rally scene and I happily took the piss out of them over the next few years. The above cartoon shows 'Shovell' and 'Binky' doing what they did best, getting lost! This was during a recce on a Dutch Rally. The stages ran through a NATO army base and the two had decided to update their pace notes. Unfortunately there was a military exercise on at the time, conducted with live ammunition! It didn't deter them and they finished their notes while grenades and mortar rounds exploded all round them!
