Nieuwe Lola B05/40

Lola Cars International Ltd has announced plans to build a new sportscar model to compete in International endurance competition beginning in 2005. The new B05/40 will be eligible for the Le Mans 24 Hour race’s new LMP2 category as well as the ACO’s new Le Mans Endurance Series reviving the 1000 km/6-hour format of sportscar racing’s 1960s heyday. The new car will also be eligible to compete in the American Le Mans Series.

The initiative follows Lola’s success in the SR2 and LMP675 categories in recent seasons, which has seen multiple race victories and titles for its B2K/40 (SR2) model and the stunning Lola-MG LMP675 that challenged and beat the previously all-conquering Audi R8 design at Sears Point in July 2003.

Lola Group Chairman Martin Birrane said, “It is only right that Lola be amongst the first to announce plans for an LMP2 design. Lola were at the forefront of the 2-litre class in the 1970s when I was a driver, and those cars played a big part in making that a truly golden era in endurance racing. The new ACO series is just what we need for a full-scale sportscar revival, with races in the classic format on classic circuits, and I am certain Lola will have a big role in its success.”

2004 will see Lola’s experienced design team take the basis of the LMP675 spec B01/60, including the proven LMP675 gearbox that has been a part of the package throughout it’s successful seasons at Le Mans and in the ALMS.

TWO DESIGNS IN ONE

The LMP2’s new carbon composite chassis will be submitted to the full set of revised crash and structural tests laid down by the FIA requiring that LMP2 cars meet the same standards as LMP1 cars. Not surprisingly, Lola engineers will be utilising the new monocoque as the basis for an LMP1 model in the future. The chassis could also be made available to other manufacturers as a foundation for their own sportscar projects in either of the new categories.

NEW LOOK FOR A NEW GENERATION

The new Lola LMP2 design will be built to the FIA’s revised aerodynamic regulations and feature the newly-mandated double rollover hoop. In an innovative move, the new package will also allow owners of Lola’s current LMP675 models to update to full LMP2 specification by purchasing an update kit made up of the new monocoque and bodywork. Lola will take the experience and expertise of it’s extensive CFD and aerodynamic capabilities to maximise the aero efficiency in respect of the new regulations that will see the removal of the flat undersides to the cars.

Lola Cars International have looked to see how best they can assist their current sportscar customers to build on their investment and this solution allows them to keep as much as possible of the current car whilst meeting the new rules and also taking advantage of the success of our newer LMP675 design.

As well as a completely new design for the coming era of LMP designs, Lola will also consider the merits of a ‘hybrid’ car, which would incorporate a completely new body kit on the existing LMP675 chassis.

TECHNICAL FREEDOM

In line with the ACO’s aim of ensuring a stable supply of engines, the LMP2 will be designed to accept the various designs currently on the LMP2 market. 2 litre - 4 cylinder turbo, V6 and V8 normally aspirated engines will all be housed in the new design.

The new chassis and gearbox will also be able to accommodate a Diesel engine in LMP1. The gearbox has been noted for its strength and adaptability and can withstand up to 800 newton metres of torque and is the ideal accompaniment to the new breed of diesel engine that is set to race at Le Mans in the future.

Work on the new design is already underway in Lola’s state of the art, on-site 50% scale wind tunnel and Lola will enter in to discussions with potential customers throughout the coming season. The first LMP2 will be completed in readiness for testing ahead of a full race debut at the 2005 Sebring 12 Hours.
