Daytona 500 2006
Nog 12 keer slapen en we kunnen weer met de ijzeren vogel naar Amerika. The great American race met heel de aanloop ernaar toe. Deze keer zijn we met 5 personen en hebben een mobile home gehuurd. We vertrekken 10 feb. Zo kunnen we dan 11 feb de Bud Shootout beleven na een brokkenrace in de openingsrace van de ARCA, met nog een concert van Staind als toemaatje.
Zondag 12 is het dan pole qualifying day. De drie volgende dagen is er wat minder activiteit op het circuit maar op donderdag zijn er de 2 kwalificatie races, the gatorade duel. Vrijdag naar traditie de IROC en de truck series, op zaterdag de Busch series en op zondag de DAYTONA 500.
Voor mij is het de 9de keer Daytona en de 10de keer NASCAR. Ben er echt aan verslaafd geraakt.

Als er internet op de camping is dan zullen we af en toe wel wat op de paddock posten

Prettige reis, mijn vriend en ga maar een sappig kippevleugelke eten... Ge weet wel waar...

Zou iets willen bestellen, maar weet niet of ge tijd hebt...

Tumult in de States rondom de manier van kwalificeren. Iemand een duwtje geven om meer snelheid meet te geven aan de voorganger. Coureurs die verschillen van mening over deze manier van rijden. Het probleem heet "bump drafting'' , wellicht dat ooggetuige AJ volgende week iets meer kan vertellen.

De boodschap van Stewart is toch aangekomen bij Nascar-officials. Deze week zullen er op de Speedway speciale 'no bump drafting zones' zijn. Op die stukken (voornamelijk de 4 bochten) mag iemand zijn voorganger geen duwtje in de rug geven.

Dag Heren en dames aan het (koude) thuisfront,

Even een klein verslagje over onze eerste Nascardagen in Daytona.

Vrijdag hebben we een vlotte vlucht gehad (wij toch, onze valiezen iets minder, zij hebben een dagje vertraging gehad). Zaterdag hebben we onze mobilehome afgehaald (In België kom je met een rijbewijs C niet toe om met zo'n obstakel rond te vliegen, maar hier heb je met een rijbewijs B genoeg om met deze villa op wielen rond te crossen). Na ons geïnstalleerd te hebben hoopten wij de arca en Bud Shootout te gaan bewonderen. Het weer (zelfs hier kan dat soms Belgisch lijken) strooiden roet in het eten. Het stopte maar niet mer regenen en de 2 races werden verschoven naar zondag. Maar begin nu niet allemaal te lachen met het weer. Ondertussen is het hier al ruim 20 graden en het gaat deze week alleen maar stijgen (tot 30 graden), voor de Belgen en Mark boven nul.
Zondag werd er dan eindelijk geraced en hoe... De arca 200 was weer een enorm spektakel. Bobby Gerhard was iedereen te snel af maar een tiental crashes zorgde voor de nodige brokken.
Als 2de van de dag zagen we de pole qualifying. De eerste startrij voor de daytona 500 zal helemaal "Jeff" getint zijn. Jeff Burton met de cingular #31 reed de snelste tijd voor Jeff Gordon #24.
Daarna was het de beurt aan rockgroep "staind" om ons warm te houden. De zanger zong uit volle borst het amerikaans volkslied en na de welgekende kreet "Gentlemen start your engines" gingen 23 wagens op pad in de Bud Shoot out. Het was een enorm spektakel met Tony Stewart, Earnhardt JR en Rookie Denny Hamlin in de hoofdrol. Deze laatste won uiteindelijk met de kampioen van vorig jaar (stewart) in zijn zog. Het was de 1ste keer dat een rookie deze prestigieuse westrijd won.
Maandag was het rustdag op Daytona en daarom gingen we naar New Smyrna Beach om daar de plaatselijke races te bekijken. Een enorm spektakel werd geboden door de sprintcars.
Vandaag hebben we zelf ook een rustdag ingebouwd. Alhoewel als je met de musketiers op pad bent in Daytona Beach (lees cruisin' Café) kan men niet echt over een rustdag spreken.

Morgen plannen we een trip naar Volusia Speedway en vanaf donderdag is het 4 dagen feest in Daytona.

Deze maatregel valt slecht bij een groot gedeelte van de teams en coureurs. Volgens sommige teamowners is Tony Stewart zelf het grootste zwarte schaap van het stel.

Wel dik kl*te dat de Daytona 500 niet op NASN Europe te zien is. Dat betekent dus geen live-race voor mij. Gisteren wel Busch Series gezien. Maar ik ben nog maar een rookie in het Nascar-gebeuren. Weet er hier trouwens iemand of je de pre-season guides nog kan kopen in België een paar jaar terug heb ik er zo eens een gekocht bij IMS in Antwerpen.
