dodelijk ongeval in euroboss series

Quote:

The NDS EuroBOSS series was struck by tragedy today, when veteran Austrian driver Frederico Careca succumbed to injuries sustained in a crash during the fourth round at Most in the Czech Republic.

The popular 58-year had qualified on the front row for the series' first overseas round of the year, but was involved in a heavy accident during the race, and had to be rushed to hospital, where he remained in a coma while doctors attempted to treat his injuries.

Careca suffered serious neck and chest injuries and, following the swift intervention of medical staff at the Autodrom Most, was taken to Most hospital. Sadly, he failed to respond to treatment and died at 1707hrs local time.

FREDERICO CARECA

21st July 1943 - 14th July 2002

Austrian Frederico Careca was a Vienna industrialist who loved racing powerful cars even more than he enjoyed striking a good business deal.

The 58-year-old - real name Fritz Glatz - started competing 24 years ago and adopted a variety of pseudonyms over the years. During the 1980s he raced as Pierre Chauvet and competed intermittently in the FIA Formula 3000 series and its fore-runner, the European F2 Championship. He was usually to be found in the lower half of the field, although he startled rivals by qualifying and finishing sixth for a round of the Euro F2 series at Donington Park in August 1984. Either way, it was taking part that mattered.

In more recent years, racing as Careca, he focused on the Interserie sports car championship before acquiring an Arrows F1 chassis to compete in EuroBOSS events. This was initially fitted with a Nissan-based V12 engine, but this season he opted for Ford-Cosworth V8 power and was immediately on the pace.

He qualified second last weekend for what was to be his final race. Interviewed on the grid before the start, he said how much he was looking forward to the rest of the season - and particularly to giving the younger drivers a run for their money. He was doing just that when he had the accident that claimed him.

NDS EuroBOSS Race Director Roger Cowman said: "We will all miss him. He was a real character and a much quicker driver than people gave him credit for."

Our deepest sympathies go to Frederico Careca's family and friends
